Built on the summit of Mount Benacantil on the seafront of Alicante, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is one of the focal points of the city. Dating back to the 9th century and home over the centuries to Moorish, Castillan, and British forces, the castle was opened to the public in 1963 and is a centre for local and regional history.

Designed as one of the largest fortifications in Spain, this medieval castle contains many rooms with exhibits detailing the history of the structure and its occupants, with displays of some of their artwork and artifacts. Access to the general castle is free, but daily guided tours are also available in Spanish and English at a small cost which provides exclusive access to other parts of the castle, such as the Renaissance Cistern, dungeons, and old hospital. The battlements and turrets provide an amazing 360-degree panoramic view of the city of Alicante and the surrounding area and the castle has a gift shop, a restaurant, and cafes for visitors.

The castle can be reached in several ways. There is no car park at the entrance but visitors can be dropped off by taxi or private vehicle at the castle gates. There is a pedestrian lift to the castle from the seafront at Playa del Postiguet on Avenida Juan Bautista Lafora which costs €2.70 per person (but is free for pensioners, over 65s and under 5s). For those feeling energetic, there are several footpaths that lead up to the castle, including from the old town, the beach, along the old battlement walls, or through the parks on the hillside.

The castle opens at 10am almost every day of the year and closes between 6pm (in mid-winter) and 11pm (during peak summer). The castle is closed on 24th, 25th and 31st December, 1st and 6th January, and 24th June.
