The Canelobre Caves are one of the main tourist attractions not only in Busot but in the entire province of Alicante. Located at an altitude of 700 meters on the northern slope of the Cabeçó D'Or mountain range – one of the few Jurassic reliefs of the Prebético in the province – they are a magnificent example of a karstic cavity.
Inside the caves, there is a space of more than 80,000 m2 that can be accessed through a 45-meter tunnel, in which the water and the rock have given rise to impressive shapes such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and jellyfish, among many others.
History - This cavity develops in the upper Jurassic limestone, whose age is 145 million years. Although little is known about this cavity until practically the 19th century, the discovery of this cave has been attributed to the Arabs, around the 10th century.
The caves were not opened to the public until after the middle of the 20th century. During the Civil War, they were used as an aircraft repair shop by the Republican army, and it was at that time that the current access tunnel to the cavity was drilled, as well as several platforms inside.
The Canelobre Caves house is inside one of the highest vaults in all of Spain, with a height of 70 meters, which looks like the authentic vault of a cathedral. As outstanding elements, we can name 'La Sagrada Familia', a group in which a rocky column of more than 25 meters high stands out, and 'El Canelobre', a stalagmite in the center of the room that is more than 100,000 years old. years.
Activities - In addition to the room that can be visited, the Cuevas del Canelobre has some areas set up for the practice of speleology, becoming a highly appreciated destination for lovers of this sport. And due to its impressive acoustics, the Cuevas del Canelobre is regularly the perfect setting for numerous musical performances that take place in Alicante, being not only a spectacle for the eyes, but also for the ears.
